Well, I made it back from vacation. It feels like I've gone from driving in the slow lane to driving in the fast lane.
My vacation was a time of relaxing with a good book, sitting on the front porch in the evening with a nice glass of iced tea, and spending time with my daughter, who came for a two-week visit. We usually see each other only once a year, so we make the best of it when she's here.
When I think about what I really like to do (on vacation), there are lots of fun things...simple things, like reading. She knitted socks for both of us, I crocheted potholders for a friend in Maine; we read books for self-improvement (her) and mysteries (me), ate out occasionally, and did a little traveling to a couple of nearby towns. Nothing really big like going to a beach house for a week or traveling to the mountain retreats. Simple things, where we had plenty of time to talk about life and work and friends and family. It was like driving in the slow lane.
But Tuesday I came back to work. And WOW! There was the fast lane.
There was our retiring director's staff luncheon at noon, the July displays to start planning, the July 4th signs to design and print (we always close on July 4th) and place around the library, the staff newsletter to finish and print for payday envelopes, the sign-up sheets and staff instructions for the August Janisse Ray writing workshop...well! you get the idea. There was more, but I won't bore you.
Everyone has the same problem when they come back from a vacation. All of our staff here has the same problem. We have to prepare before we leave and we have to jump right in when we return. Same thing the world over, I imagine.
So, today's blog is a short one. Soon I'll tell you about our new director. Soon I'll tell you about Janisse Ray's new book and her author's event here at the library. Soon I'll tell you about our new "OneClickdigital Audiobooks." Soon I'll tell you how our Summer Reading Program has been bringing in children of all ages.
Oh! There's lots to tell you about. But that's another blog.

Did you notice? Our adult summer reading club continues.
If you've gotten this far, then you probably noticed on our home page that the adult summer reading program will continue right on through the year (well, except for December and May).
Each time we've met, there have been about 14 people. And each time we've met, we've had a wonderful program. One time it was about Iceland; another time Italy, and Ireland. There's no telling where we'll go in the future. Most everyone wanted to continue the travel theme and that could take us anywhere!
Tuesday, August 9th, we'll meet for our final summer meeting, before we head into our fall meetings. We've been promised a great program and it involves cheese. Plus this will be when a drawing will be held for great grand prizes...different than the ones we've had in previous meetings.
Which brings me to this...if you haven't been part of the program, it's not too late. Just come join us in the auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on August 9th. We sign in, are handed a ticket for the drawings, and find a seat among other readers. We have a short program, talk about what we've been reading, and have the drawing.
It's been a good way to meet others who love to read and a way to see the world through the eyes of those who travel. Just another form of "armchair travels." And we need people to be part of the group who can tell us where they've traveled. That might be you!
Plan to join us now and put the date on your calendar. Let our "Novel Destinations" become a way for you to see the world from your own back yard.

Traveling to novel destinations
Has anyone noticed I haven't been around in a while? It's true! I've been on vacation for three weeks, something not many people get to do.
Where did I go, you ask? Well, not anywhere in particular. About 30 minutes, 30 miles in all directions. Mostly stayed home and enjoyed reading. Remember in an earlier blog I told you about all those books I want to read this summer?
And I joined another book club! Just can't seem to get enough of those book clubs. One club meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Western Sizzlin'. Another book club meets the first Monday at 10 a.m. at an apartment complex's clubhouse. But the third book club is right here at the Moultrie-Colquitt County Library. And its theme is "Novel Destinations."
Meeting each Tuesday evening in June from 6:30 to 7:30 in the library, our little group consists of about 14 people, just the right size for sharing what books we're reading (or have read) and having a program.
Last week Janet Litherland from Thomasville, an author who has traveled to Ireland and Scotland, gave a program about how she researches for her books. She showed us pictures of the various sites she has visited and told how the scenery and people influenced her stories. Tonight we're going to have a speaker talk to us about cruises she has taken, the various ports where she landed, and how enjoyable her trips were to foreign lands.
Our displays around the library consist of suitcases filled with books that pertain to different countries, different cultures, adventures, and fabulous travels. Our two lighted glass cases hold items from a variety of foreign countries; some items that will make you even more curious about that particular land.
As for some of the books we have in the library that might interest you in joining our book club, maybe these will encourage you to read about novel destinations.
A Book of Travellers' Tales Assembled by Eric Newby. There are some 300 plus writers and subjects represented in this book, a veritable Who's Who of travellers from 430 B.C. to the 1980s. There is a story about David Livingstone being attacked by a lion in Africa. Cecil Beaton has an evening with the Rolling Stones in Marrakesh. Hannibal crosses the Alps. And Byron visits Ali Pasha, the bloodthirsty governor of Albania. Even a story about John Steinbeck trying to get out of a small town in upstate New York. Sounds like a good read to me.
A book I think I'd really like to read is My Love Affair with England, A Traveler's Memoir by Susan Allen Toth. In her book, Ms. Toth brings a special England vividly to life as she tells about exploring the countryside, traveling in both second-class and in luxury, theatre-hopping, ghost-hunting, and honeymooning. It's not only a humorous and bittersweet writing, but wonderfully eccentric and gives us a different view of England, rather than being an extension of the States.
The Way of the Wanderer, Discover Your True Self Through Travel is by David Yeadon, who has also illustrated the book with delightful pictures. Jan Morris, author of Fifty Years of Europe, said, "This book is full of strange, moving, and entertaining experiences, drawn from 25 years of wandering our mysterious globe." Yeadon takes us on his solo jaunt at age four just outside his Yorkshire front door, through Iran in later years, into Aboriginal old ways, on a deer hunt in Norway, and into a Shinto temple in Japan. His stories provide a road map for fellow wanders to realize their dreams and experience travel as a key to their own multifaceted selves.
There are so many books about travels you can find at the Moultrie-Colquitt County Library. Be sure when you start your search for the perfect travel book that you look for the one with the alligator on the cover. It's titled Up the Amazon Without a Paddle, 60 Offbeat Adventures Around the World, written by Doug Lansky. I'm going to give you a hint...it's on the table with the big green suitcase!
If you can't make tonight at 6:30, then plan to come next Tuesday, June 28, for The Virtual Tourist. And schedule your calendar so you can attend on July 12 for Romanzo Destinazioni (about Italy) and August 9 for a surprise program.

A Week Of Summer Fun For The Kids
The Summer Reading Fun Program is in its fourth week of programs for the kids. And this week will begin with our favorite
ventriloquist.
Cliff Patton will be at the Moultrie-Colquitt County Children's Library this evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. If you've never seen him, you and the children are in for quite a treat!
On Wednesday, the 24th, at the Doerun Library, there will be a Karaoke Party from 3 to 4 p.m. Bring your best singing voice and plan to sing up a storm!
At the Moultrie Library on Thursday, the 25th, wonderful Stories by Josie will be told from 10 to 11 a.m. She is a fantastic storyteller and will have everyone mesmerized.
Then in the evening from 6 to 7 p.m., Just4Teens will meet for one more time to see "The Looney Librarian...Mr. Scott." You don't know what looney is until you've seen him!
If you haven't brought the kids to the library for summer fun, you still have time to join in. Believe me, they will enjoy everything the library has to offer them...from books to DVDs to good old-fashioned summer programs.
We'll be looking for you and the kids!!!!

Check Out This Week Of Children's Events
We're in the middle of our Summer Reading Fun Program with plenty of fun things left for the kids to do. Coming to the library when the weather is near 100 degrees seems the perfect thing to do. There are always lots of fun things to do at the library.
This evening in Moultrie from 6:30 to 7:30 at the library, the program will be by The Center for Wildlife Education and The Lamar Q. Ball, Jr. Raptor Center at Georgia Southern University. There's no doubt the kids will be fascinated by what they will see
and learn.
Wednesday, the 17th, at the Doerun Library, Master Storyteller Windell Campbell will give the kids stories to tickle their fancy and make them laugh. The time will be 3 to 4 p.m.
Then on Thursday, the 18th, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Moultrie Library, you'll need to come see our kids perform. The program is "Moultrie's Got Talent" and you're sure to be surprised at the great talent you'll see.
Also, that evening the Moultrie Library's Just4Teens will enjoy "Got Chocolate?" from 6 to 7 p.m.
Remember all the programs are free and open to the public. You just need to be on time and turn or or mute your cell phones.
Make this summer a memorable one for your kids...take them to the library. It's a good habit to begin.

Here's Another Week of Goodies For The Kids!
It's been so nice to hear the laughter from the kids who are coming in for the Summer Reading Fun Program.
This week promises to be just as great as last week, not only here at the Moultrie-Colquitt County Library, but at the Doerun Municipal Library.
Let me tell you what's going on.
This evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Moultrie Library, Sean Driscoll with Beathoven & the Big Note Band will be playing. Then on Thursday, the 11th, from 10 to 11 a.m. Miss Sally will be working with the kids in "Imagine, Create, Participate." And that evening from 6 to 7 p.m. Just4Teens will have a session of "Origami Dollars and Creating with Duct Tape."
In Doerun at the library from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the 10th, the Curious Moon Puppet Theatre will present "The Princess & the Frog."
All these programs are free and open to the public. Our children's librarian, Miss Norma, has only two requests for those attending: Please be on time and turn or or mute your cell phones.
The kids can sign up for the Summer Reading Fun and receive free "Be Creative @ Your Library" materials and goodies.
So, there you are. Wonderful fun for youngsters, no matter what age! We'll look for you.

Summer Reading Fun Is Here!
You should see the line-up of events during June that our children's librarian, Miss Norma, has for all the kids.
Things start today when they will enjoy dancing, singing and cooking! Yep! That's right...cooking! Won't that tickle their imagination? I saw the peanut butter sushi! Yummy! And she's going to tell everyone how to bake a cake with only two ingredients.
The Summer Reading Fun Program is free and open to the public. All the programs are free. Now, where can you find a deal like that? Those attending (parents, included) need to be on time and turn off or mute their cell phones. The place fills up fast.
When the kids sign up for Summer Reading Fun from June 1st to 30th, they receive their free Be Creative @ Your Library materials and goodies. Miss Norma was signing up three little boys in the same family when I went to visit her a few minutes ago.
So, this evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. all the kids that show up are going to have a super-duper time dancing, singing and cooking! I bet they even get to eat something...probably that sushi!
These events aren't only at the Moultrie library. There will be events every Wednesday at the Doerun Municipal Library also. The time will be 3 to 4 p.m. The library is located at 185 North Freeman Street in Doerun.
In fact, tomorrow in Doerun, kids will be able to "Imagine, Create, Participate!" with Miss Sally. She's a well-known Moultrie artist, who loves to teach little children all the fun of art. She's the one with the big splash of blue in the front of her hair. Sure, you know
her!
Then on Thursday, June 4th, kids at the Moultrie library will enjoy the creativity of One Heart. I'm not going to tell you what that's about, but I think it has a banjo involved.
And there's something special the evening of the 4th called Just4Teens. It will be from 6 to 7 p.m. That's when everyone will see the wacky, high energy, juggling guy Todd Key. If you haven't seen him before, you better not miss this one. He's tooooo good
to miss!

There's Still Time To Join The Kids' Programs
Today Miss Sally is standing in front of gobs of children, who are sitting at tables with all kinds of art supplies in front of them. . .paint pens, tape, paper, etc. The large group of children and their parents are in the reading area of the main library, and Miss Sally is teaching them how to make a special bug that turns into a butterfly.
It's not too late to be part of your library's summer fun if you're a child. It's not too late to bring your children to the library for the Summer Reading Program and all the fun that's available while school is out.
This evening, June 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. will be Just 4 Teens. Our Children's Librarian, Miss Norma, will show everyone how to make Duct Tape Creations. And you won't believe what you'll be able to make from duct tape. . .that shiny, silver sticky tape.
On Tuesday, June 24, our Story Express Lady, LaDoris Bias-Davis, will be here to keep children entertained. The time will be 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
And if you don't mind traveling to the Doerun Library on Wednesday, June 25, there will be a Kids Karaoke Party from 3 to 4 p.m. (Doesn't that sound like fun?) The Doerun Library is at 185 North Freeman Street. You could call 229-782-5507 for directions.
